SUSTAINABLE DESIGN EXHIBITION

The Sustainable Design Exhibition is an effort to leverage the energy and creativity surrounding Beirut Design Week to bring attention to the sustainability of our products and processes. This exhibition, curated by MENA Design Research Center in partnership with the Design Department at Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts, features products by designers who participated in three workshops led by international experts on organic materials. Inspired by the tools and processes from the workshops, these Lebanese designers have put together an exciting collection of products that will be a stepping stone towards the future of sustainable design in Lebanon.

LIMITED SUSTAINABILITY BY QUEI STUDIO /BERLIN

For the first time in Beirut Design Week, the curatorial Studio Quei from Berlin will be unveiling their collection under the theme ‘Limited Sustainability’.
As we dream of endless possibilities and set attributes for “good” or “bad”, we sometimes forget that sustainable design is not inherently democratic.
By rethinking overproduction and focusing on locally sourced and produced products, we tend to forget that the rise in price is not just a little obstacle we take for a cleaner conscious, but also excludes most people.
Is this a revolution which is only fought by the ones who can afford it?
Can we really make a difference through consuming? Is sustainability a luxury? Limited Sustainability explores the influence of limits to comprehension. It challenges limits as initiator for thought, critique and understanding instead of a stale stagnation.

Opening: 20 May, at 6:00 PM
Open from 21 to 28 May, 10:00 AM – 08:00 PM

Déjà -VU: POSTER COLLECTION BY MUSEUM FüR GESTALTUNG ZüRICH /SWITZERLAND

Made for a short-dated use in public space posters are ephemeral products par excellence. The mass media promotes new commercial articles which are no more innovative the next day or invites us to cultural events which shortly belong to the past. Therefore, sustainability seems to be incompatible with poster design. Nevertheless, some graphic designers reflect within their work a more ecologically worthwhile application of posters. Exemplary, the exhibition « Déjà Vu – Recycling strategies in Poster Design » presents four different approaches of Swiss graphic designers for re- and upcycling ideas in cultural posters, while representing an institution or an event with a recognizable identity.

WE ARE ALL MAKERS: USERS ASSEMBLED DESIGNS BY BEIRUT MAKERS

Beirut Makers invite users to actively participate to the creation. In the design process, we took you into account, and want to share with you the assembly and composition of our designs.
Modular: we design the system, and you play with it, organize it to fit your life.
A fair trade: in this economic crisis it is a fair exchange to give everyone the occasion to participate and understand better the design, and displace some of the manufacturing process to your home in exchange of a more affordable design.
Honest joinery is good design: a virtuous constrain of user-assembled design is that hidden, obscure assemblies, with glues and others are forbidden. Only good materials and honest design, with proper connections and joinery can be offered in broad daylight to be assembled, disassembled many times.

Beirut Makers is an open collective of makers joining forces to explore digital fabrication.
Participants: Kamal Aoun, Hadil Ankouny, Assad Awad, Stéphanie Bachir, Marine Bustros, Guillaume Crédoz, Mariane Ghrayche, Charbel Jreijiri & Michel Moukarz.

Open from 21 to 28 May, 10:00 AM – 08:00 PM
