CLUSTER is a platform for urban research, art and design initiatives in downtown Cairo. CLUSTER aims at establishing a critical space for urban discourse. CLUSTER engages critical theorization while being grounded in professional practice, negotiating the blurred boundaries between formal/institutional regulations and everyday urban informality. CLUSTER’s mission: Promoting a sustainable urban environment and a more diverse and accessible public space, investigating new approaches to informal practices to generate alternative modes of urban development, developing a platform integrating art and culture as urban catalysts, establishing a networking hub, promoting interdisciplinary modes of practice to bring together architects and planners, designers, artists and social scientists, to work with stake- holders and local communities, establishing a collaborative research framework, allowing for collaboration with local and international universities and research groups.
